Indian Airlines finally signs order for 43 A320s
Indian Airlines signed (20-Feb-06) a purchase order for 20 A319s, four A320s and 19 A321s, to be powered by General Electric CFM56-5 engines.

All aircraft will feature a two-class cabin layout, and are scheduled for delivery from late 2006 to 2010 at the rate of one per month.

The airlines Chairman and Managing Director, Dr Vishwapati Trivedi, stated, the acquisition of the 43 aircraft of the A320 family will allow Indian Airlines to step up growth and modernisation, expand its market and further improve the quality of its product offering.

The carrier announced (04-Feb-06) plans to raise USD145 million in foreign currency loans to finance pre-delivery of equipment.

Indian Airlines also received (07-Feb-06) offers for dry leases of five A330s and two A310 aircraft. The airline originally issued the tenders in Dec-05 for A330s, A340s, A310-300s, B767 or B777s.

Indian Airlines has received permission to commence services to the UK, Australia and the US, however a lack of equipment has prevented the airline from launching services. It is expected services to Europe and Australia will commence by early Jun-05.

The airline currently operates to countries including Pakistan, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bahrain, UAE (Dubai) and Kuwait.
