Indian Airlines signs agreement to acquire 43 Airbus aircraft
Indian Airlines officially signed (17-Dec-05) an agreement with Airbus for the purchase of 43 new aircraft, including 19 A319s, four A320s, and 20 A321s.

The acquisition proposal had been approved by the Indian Airlines board in Mar-02 and the Public Investment Board in Nov-04 and received final approval from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs for the proposed USD2.2 billion acquisition in Sep-05.

The carrier will reportedly use 70% of the new aircraft to replace the existing fleet, while the remainder would be used to accommodate ‘growth in the market. Indian will take delivery of the first aircraft by Sep-06 and r+G201eceive one aircraft every month thereafter.

Meanwhile, Indian Airlines took delivery of the first of three leased A319 aircraft on 07-Dec-05. The carrier also plans to lease 12 wide body aircraft for international operations and six ATRs for regional services.
