Welcome IndiGo! LCCs remain bullish
IndiGo has become Indias sixth new entrant in three years, launching services with one A320 on 08-Aug-06.

IndiGo took delivery of its second A320 on 24-Aug-06 to be deployed on services from Kolkata to Delhi and Guwahati and to launch Delhi-Bangalore service from 30-Aug-06. Indigo plans to take delivery of one aircraft per month for the remainder of 2006.

Despite intense competition and falling yields, the carrier is highly optimistic about the future. Like his Indian LCC counterparts, IndiGo CEO, Bruce Ashby, is not concerned by more entrants and fresh capacity in the market, believing it is good for competition and will help entice travellers away from trains. According to Mr Ashby, the Indian domestic market is far from mature, so there is plenty of room to grow.

The Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation predicts the LCC market share in India will reach 70% by 2010, making it one of the worlds leading LCC markets in terms of total market penetration.

The carrier announced it expects to carry 475,000 passengers in its first year of operations, rising to 6.7 million passengers in 2008. Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director stated, the disposable incomes of the middle class are rising, the number of existing and potential passengers for each aircraft is huge.
