Airframe MRO: Set for take-off in India
17-May-2007 |
In common with the rest of the Indian aviation industry, the nations maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO) sector is preparing to boom, as we review in this Perspective.
After years of underinvestment, the field is experiencing a surge of interest as foreign companies court and negotiate with local airlines and infrastructure entities to establish joint venture facilities around the country.
The first international company to start large-scale maintenance operations seems likely to be Lufthansa Technik, which says it is on schedule to open its facility at Hyderabad International Airport by 2008. The company has pledged USD23 million towards the venture, of which it will own 75%, with the concessionaire for Hyderabad Airport, GHIAL, holding the remainder.
The facility, designed to undertake the more labour- and infrastructure-intensive (and lucrative) C and D checks, will focus on narrowbodied B737 and A320 equipment. The complex is unlikely to sit idle, as Lufthansa Technik already has MRO agreements in place with Air Deccan, Kingfisher, Jet Airways, Air Sahara and GoAir.
