Hyderabad International Airport to become MRO centre or an aviation academy
(CAPA) Airports Authority of India (AAI) announced (15-Oct-07) it is considering plans to convert the existing Hyderabad International Airport into either an MRO centre or an aviation academy.

According to the Hindu Business Line, G.K. Chaukiyal, Executive Director-Planning of AAI, stated: “we are seeking legal opinion. Initially we were told that it would be okay to set up an MRO centre at the existing Hyderabad airport. Besides, the Government is also examining the option of setting up a flying college to provide training or an aviation university with support from the State Government”.

The airport is scheduled to close down when the new GMR Hyderabad International Airport opens in Mar-08. GMR Group meanwhile announced construction of the new airport is 85% complete.

GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL) won the bid to develop and operate the greenfield airport through an international competitive bidding process conducted by the Government of Andhra Pradesh and the Government of India. Built through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiative, the airport will operate as a major domestic and international hub.
