Mahbub Zamil was appointed as the new Chairman of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, as the Bangladesh Government aims to turn around the struggling carrier. Mr Zamil is additionally head of the Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry.
A new Board of Directors has also been appointed to the carrier by the caretaker government, including: - Civil Aviation and Tourism Secretary;
- Finance Secretary;
- Director of Business Administration Department of Dhaka University;
- Editor of the Bangladesh Monitor
- President of the International Chamber of Commerce and Industry;
- Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Operation and Training);
- Engineer-in-Chief of Army;
- President of the Foreign Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The carrier reported a USD100 million net loss in the 12 months ended 30-Jun-07, due to rising fuel prices and weak passenger demand. The government has since launched an emergency rescue plan, which included transforming the carrier as a public company in Jul-07 and retrenching a large number of staff.
