SriLankan Airlines provides English and Personality Training to aspire cabin staff
SriLankan Airlines is carrying out a unique CSR project free of charge to develop the English language skills and personalities of young ladies who aspire to become flight stewardesses, but fall just short in the recruitment process.

Pradeepa Dahanayake, Head of Human Resources, said, “SriLankan Airlines is the leading aviation related organisation in the country. It is our goal to prepare young Sri Lankan men and women for rewarding careers in the global aviation industry.”

The Language & Personality Development Programme is being carried out at the National Carrier’s International Aviation Academy (IAA) for those who reach the final stage of interviews and testing for recruitment as Trainee Flight Stewardesses, but are not admitted. Nineteen young ladies who had been identified as promising candidates underwent three months training.

Although the airline does not guarantee employment for successful participants of the programme, most have been recruited by SriLankan and some by other leading private sector organisations.

Sanjeeva Jayatileke, Manager Human Resource Development at SriLankan, said, “The skills that they gain through this programme will serve them well in any modern mercantile organisation.”

Successful participants in the programme also received a Level 3 (Upper Intermediate) Certificate from Edexel (UK), a partner of the IAA, as they passed the London Test of English.

The airline earlier successfully trained four groups through a different programme – Personality Development. The success of this programme saw 90% of participants being recruited as cabin staff for SriLankan. However, English language was identified as a major area that needed focus, and was added to the programme.

The programme also provides training in teambuilding, grooming & deportment, hygiene & health habits, first aid, motivation & values, time management, and etiquette & finesse. Lectures were conducted at the Cosmopolitan Learning Academy in Colombo and at the IAA in Katunayake.

The IAA is SriLankan’s training wing, and serves the manpower requirements of not just SriLankan but airlines, airports, travel agents, and other aviation industry organizations throughout Asia. It currently offers programmes to external participants in Airline Cabin Crew Training, Air Cargo, Airline Ticketing at three levels (Basic, Intermediate and Advanced), Aircraft Weight & Balance, the International Civil Aviation Organization’s Flight Operations Officer/Dispatchers’ Course, and Dangerous Goods Regulations.
